Our Story
Newark Good Shepherd Church of the Nazarene is a member of Church of the Nazarene International. Our history starts in 1983 when Rev. Gesner Jean, and his wife and four children moved from Brooklyn, New York to East Orange, New Jersey. The Church started in their living room. Through trials and tribulations, the church moved from their living room to West End in Newark where they rented a little room. From the West End, we moved to our current location on South Orange Avenue in 1994. Though sacrificial giving, the church bought this dilapidated building and renovated it.
The tragic passing of Rev. Gesner Jean in 2001 created an unprecedented blow to the church. The victories of the past seem to disappear like smoke in the sky. The future was as uncertain as it was in the early days. Nevertheless, a core group who remained were unshaken and committed to go through the storms. After a year of searching, the church board and the district called on Rev. Dumerzier Charles and his family to pastor the Church from Mount Vernon Nazarene University. Pastor Charles and his wife, Cindy Charles, have faithfully lead the church since 2002.
